Regardless of how safe cars get, bureaucrats have to justify their existence so safety standards get jacked up every year such that incredibly safe cars from 5 years ago would be deemed unfit for the road today. The low hanging fruit is gone, and there just aren't that many tricks left to strengthen the structure, so they have to add material, making cars progressively heavier, supports thicker, and interiors airbaggier.
